Even though sources say he has not been formally charged, Madzore was reportedly arrested by the Law and Order section today after being summoned to Harare Central Police Station, before being transferred to Bindura.

His Deputy, Costa Machingauta, confirmed the arrest, saying the police alleged that he insulted Mugabe during a rally in Mushumbi in Mbire district, Mashonaland Central province, on Saturday.

“What is surprising, though, is that every person I have talked to professed ignorance over the insults Madzore is alleged to have made,”

said Machingauta, who spoke on the phone from Mushumbi.

Madzore is understood to be represented by Charles Kwaramba, who was conferring with the police when The Zimbabwean sought to talk to him.

Critics accuse the police of using the Criminal (Codification and

Reform) Act to harass political opponents.

Madzore, together with 28 other party activists, is currently on bail for the alleged murder of senior police officer in a trial that MDC-T regards as political victimisation.

He spent more than a year in jail before being granted bail.
