Shabanie found guilty of violence

Shabanie Mine have been found guilty of causing the abandonment of their May 16 league match against Harare City and have been fined $10, 000, $2, 000 of which has been suspended for the rest of the season on condition that the club is not involved in other acts of violence.

On top of that, the club has lost out on the game as the match has been awarded to Harare City on a 3-0 scoreline, pushing Harare City to second position on the league table, two points behind leaders Highlanders who are on 26 points. Dynamos are third on 22 points.

Shabanie has been given up to 30 June to pay up the fine and the costs of the hearing.

In coming up with the judgment, the disciplinary committee of Don Moyo, Vusi Vuma and Brighton Mudzamiri found Shabanie guilty of causing the match’s abandonment through the throwing of missiles onto the pitch by their supporters.

The match was called off with nine minutes remaining due to crowd trouble when Harare City were leading 3-1. In his report the referee, Sambulo Dube, says he stopped the match for about 11 minutes when Shabanie supporters started throwing missiles onto the pitch after the match officials had disallowed their goal for offside.

Upon resumption, says the referee, the home team supporters again started pelting the Harare City goalkeeper with missiles resulting in him stopping the match for five minutes and later on decided to abandon the game altogether.

In their assessment of the situation, the judges said it was clear that violence led to the abandonment of the match adding that such irreprehensible conduct cannot be tolerated.

“Clubs and their supporters must learn that the referee`s decision is final. There are other channels of airing grievances without resorting to violence. This must be nipped in the bud to protect life and limb, and even the sponsors,” reads the judgment released by the PSL Thursday.

Harare City this week return to the city of their problems with Shabanie where they play FC Platinum at Mandava Stadium while Shabanie could also make up for the lost points by beating How Mine at home.
