As a Zanu (PF) politburo member, Kasukuwere went to the University to speak to students about the controversial indigenisation and empowerment programme.
“Kasukuwere said the students should vote for Zanu (PF) in the coming elections because the party is empowering the people. After the meeting, the minister bought us sadza in the university’s canteen,” said one student.
The student, who preferred not to be named, said there was chaos in the canteen as hungry students jostled to get a free plate of food.
“Why is the minister empowering the students by buying them sadza when they are struggling to pay school fees? Right now the government’s cadetship programme is in limbo and no government minister is talking about it. We want real empowerment programmes, not sadza,” said another student who also refused to be named.
During the meeting, Kasukuwere accused Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Gideon Gono of being the country’s most corrupt person.
“Those banks are paying him, why is he protecting interests which are not his?” said Kasukuwere.
Kasukuwere claimed that the central bank governor was taking bribes from foreign banks in exchange for protection. The minister is pushing for the indigenisation of foreign banks; a move that Gono says is ill advised.
