USACF’s education investment

The United States Africa Children’s Fellowship is celebrating a decade in Zimbabwe, during which it donated infrastructure to impoverished schools.

Sheri Grashow, President and co-founder of the non-governmental organisation, expressed satisfaction with the role USACF had played in reviving education.

From humble beginnings, USACF is now contributing to the education of students in more than 170 schools in Zimbabwe. A number of breakthroughs have been made, including the shipping of more than 20 containers of books to Zimbabwe.

These and other materials such as toys, sports equipment and clothing were sourced from well-wishers in the United States. Grashow said the organisation had also repaired more than 1,200 student desks and benches mostly at rural schools.

USACF has now expanded its presence to Botswana, Ghana and Tanzania where it is carrying out similar initiatives. Grashow said she was humbled by the impact donations had made on communities.

“In school after school, I was taken to see fully functioning libraries. I was stunned by the pride people took in these libraries,” Grashow said from Brooklyn, United States.

“The whole USACF programme has finally taken root and its branches are bearing fruit. The excitement in these schools is not restricted to teachers and students. There is a new energy in the surrounding communities. There is a very long road yet to travel but change is happening. We are on the right path.”

Founded in 2003, USACF is dedicated to improving the lives of children in Africa.
