Village police a cause for concern

Villagers here have accused the local police neighbourhood watch committee of taking the law into their own hands.

Recently, the NWC allegedly arrested 87-year-old Goliath Mathew Ndhlovu and abused him infront of his grandchildren and neighbours. They accused him of harbouring a suspected thief.

The victim’s neighbour castigated the police for the brutality and blamed the NWC for tarnishing the image of the police.

“I think regular police officers should revise the vetting and recruitment process of the NWC,” she said.

Ndhlovu said the police had lost its professionalism and dignity. He appealed for help to purchase medication the attack.

“I suffered physical and emotional abuse from quite a number of neighbourhood watch committee members”.

“I managed to identify two perpetrators, Dennis Moyo and another one by the surname Ngwenya,” he said. “

In an interview, Dennis Moyo, well known in the locality as ‘Koffie’, blamed the victim for shielding a suspected criminal and obstructing the course of justice.

He claimed Ndlovu had confronted them with a spear when they went to his home to arrest a suspected thief.

However, a senior NWC member, Robert Ngwenya, confirmed the incident and was quick to blame his fellow work mates, Koffie and Ngwenya.
