Warriors force a draw

Kuda Musharu grabbed a 73rd minute equaliser as Zimbabwe’s Warriors forced a draw against the Flames of Malawi in a Fifa-sanctioned international friendly match at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.

This was Musharu’s first goal in the Warriors colours but it was enough to cancel South Africa based Robin Ngalande’s 29th minute opener for the Flames who fielded their best team that included six players who ply their trade in South Africa.

The Malawians were not taking the match lightly as they are building a team of local and foreign-based players to prepare for their forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Kenya and Namibia in in June.

However, reports coming from Blantyre suggest that the Warriors were by far the better side and could have won the game more easily, especially in the second half, had they utilised all the scoring opportunities that came their way.

To their credit, the Warriors should be applauded for putting up such a good show despite being accorded only a day’s training after leaving Harare on Thursday for the game.

Just like the Flames, the Warriors were also using the friendly match to fine-tune their team ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against Egypt at the National Sports on 9 June and Guinea in Conakry a week after.

The match between the Flames and the Warriors was endorsed by the international football federation and will see points being earned for consideration on the Coca Cola world rankings while the players who turned out in the friendly will earn caps for their participation.

Coincidentally, Zimbabwe and Malawi have been draw to meet in the quarter finals of the COSAFA Castle Cup on 13 July.
