Warriors goalie honoured

Warriors goalkeeper, Washington Arubi, was on cloud 9 this week, after he was voted the Pretoria University’s most outstanding player for the 2012-13 season.

Arubi, who joined the ABSA Premiership debutants from Dynamos at the beginning of the just-ended season, helped the side to achieve a top eight finish. He told The Zimbabwean that he felt honoured to get such recognition in his debut season in South Africa.

“I realise that coming to South Africa was the best decision I could ever make,” said the goalkeeper, who also played for former Zimbabwean league champions Highlanders.

“When I arrived here I met new players and received good treatment from the whole team, which made it very easy for me to adapt and get back to my good form. The competition has been very tough, but since I got my first game away to Golden Arrows, I made sure I did my best and we won that game 1-0.

“I went on to win two Man- of-the-Match awards, both games coming against Kaizer Chiefs, with whom we drew 1-1 in Johannesburg and the last league game, which we won 1-0 at the Mbombela Stadium.”

His season having ended on a high, Arubi said his next task was to cement his position as the senior national team’s number one goalkeeper, which could be strained by the recent return to the fold of the more experienced Tapuwa Kapini.

“I like competition. It will be good to have Kapini back because he is a brilliant goalkeeper, but I will keep on working hard. I always have confidence. I am also aiming higher individually and should a higher club bid for my services, I will seriously consider them. Pretoria University are a good club that still prove themselves and I would still be happy to remain with them till the end of my contract in 2016.”
