ZFC brings Chess to the people

The Zimbabwe Chess Federation has lined up five competitions to be spread across all corners of the country, with a renewed intention of targeting new talent.

ZFC President, Charles Kuwaza, recently told The Zimbabwean at the just-ended Gweru prix that his body had drawn up a theme that explains the objective of the competitions.

“Our theme will be ‘Bringing Chess to the people’ because, in the interest of building a formidable national squad, we want to take the game to the grassroots and unleash the talent that lies unexposed there,” said Kuwaza.

In the past, such ZCF competitions saw the emergence of an unheralded player, Robert Gwaze, who rose to become an International Chess Master.

The latest tourney saw little known Bismark Bhobhojani coming out tops, after he garnered 6.5 points, but the competition was too much for International Master, Rodwell Makoto, who had to settle for fourth position, where he trailed the duo of Nigel Mabhiza and Hamilton Mandeya.

Mutare-based chess star Dion Moyo and Elisha Chimbamu also shared the fourth position and according to Kuwaza, Masvingo would be the next port of call for the ZCF prix next month.
