Best of the Best: Paul Gundani

Paul Gundani remains probably the most popular footballer who played for former PSL side, Ziscosteel. Besides appearing on the Castle Lager Soccer Stars of the Year calendar for some time, he also made his mark for the country, playing for Reinhadt Fabisch’s “Dream Team of the early 1990s.

My Best Club

Ziscosteel FC remains the best outfit. They gave birth to my career and whenever I wore their jersey, I felt honoured that I had become the soul of the team. I used to give it all I had whenever I was in the field representing Zisco. I am who I am today because of the foundation I got there from the days I was a junior player.

My Best teammate

The now late Newman Bizerk was a complete player. He was a good man-marker and that allowed me the liberty to venture upfront without having to worry much about quick counter-attacks.

My Best stadium

Ziscosteel’s home ground, Torwood Stadium, was a slaughter house in which we destroyed a number of visiting teams. It had a heavy turf and our training sessions there worked to our advantage whenever we met our opponents.

My Best coach

All coaches who handled me, because they left a positive mark in my game, which they improved tremendously. They are the ones that shaped my style of play.

My Best season

My best season was in 1994, when I joined Lancashire Steel, a then First Division side that I helped gain promotion into the premier league by scoring crucial goals.

My Best ever Zimbabwean player

Stanley “Sinyo” Ndunduma was of a rare talent.

My Best opponent

I came across a number of talented players, from which I can’t single anyone out. They all were good and helped me improve my game.

My Best Message from a coach

My former Zambian mentor, Freddy Mwila, who joined Ziscosteel in 1984 and told me that I was destined to play for my country as long as I remained disciplined, focused, determined and worked hard even on my own. He gave me a book written by a Zambian commentator and in it, I found that he was the first Zambian player to play in England for Aston Villa. The discovery inspired me a lot.
