Chindori-Chininga died last week when the Jeep Cherokee he was driving crashed into a tree at the Shinje turn-off along the Harare-Guruve road.
Bindura VID officials, who refused to be identified, told The Zimbabwean that the defective braking system and other mechanical faults were characteristic of problems which develop over time due to poor vehicle maintenance.
They said judging from the condition of the vehicle, the accident could have been ‘legitimate’.
“The vehicle was inspected at Bindura VID. This is a high profile road accident and I would not want to be quoted in the media in connection with the death of Chindori-Chininga. The likely cause of the accident is what I have told you,” said one official. Some wondered why the accident came hardly a week after Chindori-Chininga, as Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Energy, released a damming report on the diamond sector. Chindori-Chininga’s death comes at a time Zanu (PF) is preparing for party primaries ahead of elections.
At the height of the constitution making process, Chindori-Chininga was kicked out of the Copac by Zanu (PF) for allegedly leaking important information to MDC. There were other reports that Zanu (PF) earlier suspected Chindori-Chininga was among party legislators, who broke ranks with the rest and voted in favour of MDC-T Lovemore Moyo’s speaker of parliament candidature.
An anonymous Facebook activist, Baba Jukwa, recently warned that Chindori-Chininga would be assassinated if he was not careful, since Zanu (PF) suspected him to be the whistle blower and trouble-shooter for the social media page account owner.
