City fathers suspend recruitment

City fathers here have suspended workers’ promotions and recruitment drives on major projects with immediate effect.

The council made the decision during its monthly meeting, following proposals by the Director of Engineering Services, Philip Pfukwa, to appoint 19 workers into various positions to run the Harare Quarry Plant.

“We should not rush to employ workers at the quarry because our new partner may bring in machines which would not suit these new employees and where will we put them?” said Councillor Panganai Charumbira. “We have therefore frozen new recruitment and appointments in key sectors which are still pending.”

Councillor Thomas Muzuva, Chairperson of Business Committee, set the motion arguing that if the partnership did not materialize, the council would be forced to sustain the workers. Councillor Friday Muleya seconded the motion.
