City water and sanitation improved

Water and sanitation systems in a number of urban areas are due to be improved as the government steps up the rehabilitation of the waterworks.

Cities and towns that are part of the Urgent Water Supply and Sanitation Rehabilitation Project are Harare, Chitungwiza, Chegutu, Kwekwe, Masvingo and Mutare.

The African Development Bank is supporting the project, which will rehabilitate sanitation plants in the six municipalities to the tune of $29,65 million.

Work has begun at Morton Jaffray Water Treatment Plant and at Firle and Crowborough Sewage Treatment Plants. The upgrading of the water treatment plants will enable the city to discharge treated waste water into the rivers that feed its main supply dam, Lake Chivero.

Harare received a $9,5 million grant for the project last month.

The Mutare water and sanitation works valued at $9,04 million, was the first to be implemented under the project.
