The event’s organising secretary Tofara Moyo said all preparations had gone according to plan and revealed that sponsorship had already been secured for one of the biggest bodybuilding competitions on the Zimbabwean sporting calendar.
Moyo added that they had also received entries from defending champion, Victor Hungwe, Zimbabwe’s Mr Ironman Vincent Kandiero, the seasoned Issac ‘Sugar Sugar’ Kamuchenga and the reigning Mr Botswana, Champion Champion.
The Mr Musclemania competition draws together a cosmopolitan line-up of the best bodybuilders from the region, with entries coming from South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, and Zimbabwe.
The event is ranked second behind the Mr Ironman, which was won by Kandiero last month. Moyo expressed disappointment at the apathy shown by small towns in the country, as he revealed that most of the entries had come from Harare and Bulawayo. He also bemoaned the lack of interest from female participants and urged women to take up bodybuilding as a professional sport that does not in any way involve violence or contact.
Zimbabwe also plays host to the Mr and Miss Zimbabwe and the All Africa Olympia, which draws participants from as far afield as Nigeria, Ghana, the Ivory Coast, and Cameroon. The prize money for the Mr All Africa Olympia has this year been increased to $20,000 from $10,000 last year.
