Divided over peace

Political leaders here are divided over
the existence of political violence in the province.

The two MDC formations say their supporters are being
intimidated by traditional leaders in rural
areas while Zanu (PF) claims that the atmosphere is peaceful.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a peace meeting organised
by the Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee in Masvingo last
week, the MDC formations claimed that the political atmosphere remained
tense.

Wilstaf Sitemere, Provincial Chairman of the MDC formation led by Prime
Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, said he was worried by the increasing
cases of political violence as chiefs and headmen harrassed party supporters.

Sitemere said he had taken up the issue with the local branch of JOMIC
but nothing had been done.

“It is better that this issue is taken up by JOMIC at national level
or principals in the Government of National Unity,” said Sitemere.

Benaya Muchovo, Provincial Chairman of the MDC formation led by
Welshman Ncube, echoed the sentiments but was hopeful
that the situation would soon improve.

However, Zanu (PF) Masvingo Provincial Chairman Lovemore Matuke said the situation was peaceful and everything was in place to ensure a free and fair poll.

“No cases of violence have been reported and we are just taking a leaf from what our president is saying about the polls that they should be peaceful,” added Matuke.

Police in Masvingo have said they will deal impartially with all cases of politically motivated violence and urged supporters of all political parties to report to the police if they are harassed
