Divisions rock Zanu Ndonga

Ideological differences and policy inconsistencies have caused division in Zanu Ndonga in the run up to elections.

The party’s President, Gondayi Vutuza, and National Chairperson, Reketayi Semwayo, have developed different stances over the recent Constitutional Court ruling compelling President Robert Mugabe to proclaim the election date no later than July 31.

Semwayo was part of the coalition of political parties that recently gathered to express their reservations over the Constitutional Court ruling, which they contended would push the country into a sham election. The coalition included the MDC-T, MDC, Mavambo Kusile Dawn and ZAPU.

Semwayo’s presence at the event seemed to have confirmed his party’s endorsement of the decision by the Zanu (PF) grand opposition but his premier is of the view he violated the party’s principles and acted in a unilateral manner.

Vutuza bemoaned “the high levels of individualism” in his party saying the development had caused discord.

“As a party, we resolved that we would abide by the Constitutional Court ruling but surprisingly enough, Semwayo attended the meeting that was contesting the ruling and we wonder whether he is trying to run his own faction,” said Vutuza.

However, Semwayo refuted Vutuza’s claims, adding that Vutuza was a self-proclaimed party leader who was not recognised in Zanu Ndonga’s structures.

“A President of the party is elected by a Congress and since the death of Ndabaningi Sithole, we have not held a Congress,” said Semwayo.
