Dredger arrives in Beira

The port of Beira in the central Mozambican province of Sofala has received a brand new dredger that will keep the port’s channel clear of sand and silt.

“Macuti” is a trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) with a capacity to hold 2,500 cubic metres of silt. It is to be operated by the Mozambican Dredging Company, EMODRAGA, which will receive technical assistance during the first year of operation from the Danish consortium of Johs. Gram-Hanssen and Rohde Nielsen.

The ship was built at the Western Baltija shipyard in Klaipeda, Lithuania and on 29 April was formally handed over to EMODRAGA.

Johs. Gram-Hanssen and Rohde Nielsen have now delivered “Macuti” safely to Beira.

The dredger will shortly begin work on the “Macuti Bend”, where silt has collected. Clearing this build up will enable ships of up to 60,000 tonnes to enter the port, and will end the need to move coal by barge for transhipment at sea onto larger vessels.
