The hospital’s emergency and resuscitation ward can currently accommodate two people. However, the province has eight districts and a population of 1.6 million people.

Lovemore Mbengeranwa, the Health Services Board Executive Chairman, said the construction of the new ward should see lives being saved. He also noted that due to the centrality of the hospital, people from the SADC region traveling through, often required its services.

“Gweru Hospital does not have a proper intensive care department. We require a proper state of the art emergency and resuscitation unit which is critical for saving lives,” said Mbengeranwa.

The Minister of Health and Child Welfare Henry Madzorere also indicated that the health board was trying to improve working conditions for those employed in hospitals.
