Katsande honoured

Warriors defensive midfielder Willard Katsande’s explosive form for Kaizer Chiefs during the just-ended season finally paid off when he got an award recently.

Katsande, used as one of the two defensive midfielders for the ABSA Premiership champions, received a R25,000 reward, after he was voted The Amakhosi’s most improved player for the 2012/13, in a glamorous event held at the Vodaworld in Midrand.

The event, hosted by Kaizer Chiefs Executive Chairman, Kaizer Motaung, drew attendance from a number of personalities in South Africa, including the country’s Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula and Katsande should be proud that he was one of those honoured in such style.

Katsande was the only Zimbabwean who received an award at the ceremony, a worthy recognition for the player who became one of the hardest working starlets in the middle of the park, where feet lunge for the whole 90 minutes of a normal soccer game.

The way he stopped opposition attacks and sprayed passes like confetti at a wedding game in and game out reminded many of countryman Tinashe Nengomasha, a legend still worshipped by the Chiefs’ faithful even after he left for Bidvest Wits at the beginning of the past season.

Ironically, Katsande, who inherited Nengomasha’s position, albeit wearing jersey Number 31 when Nengomasha wore Number 8, had as bad a first season as his predecessor in the black and gold kit.

The hard-tacking defensive link was honoured alongside defender Eric Mathoho, who received the Fair Play Award, striker Bernard Parker who got the Goal of the Year and Top Goal Scorer awards, captain and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, who got the Amakhosi Readers’ Choice, Kaizer Chiefs Online Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Season and the Player of the Season awards.
