Swallows’ Chief Executive Officer, Leon Prins, revealed to The Zimbabwean early this week that his club had instead decided to keep Machapa’s countryman, Gilbert Mapemba.
He said Machapa, who spent most of the past season on the sidelines, was not in the future plans of coach, Zerca Marques, as there were too many players who played his position at the club.
“Machapa has been released, but Mapemba will be staying for at least another season because he has impressed us since he joined the club and his position is quite difficult to fill,” said Prins.
But it will be months before Mapemba can kick the ball again, as Prins revealed the right back was still recovering from a knee operation that is expected to only heal in October. He also said there were some Zimbabwean players on trials at his club and promised to sign at least one of them.
“Come next season and there will be a top striker from Zimbabwe playing for the Dube Birds. From the lot we have on trial here, it is the striker we are interested in because he is a classy player, with good displays and classy shooting. I cannot reveal his name for now,” he said.
