Jembere was arrested at around 6pm at the home of Ward 6 Councillor, Richard Tawa, in Overspill together with Epworth Local Board Chairperson, Gift July.
Jembere said: “We were at Councillor Tawa’s home in Overspill together with Councillor July discussing the issue of the Community Hall that is being funded by the Australian Embassy. In the middle of the meeting, about 15 police officers came and took us to Epworth Police Station.
“We were detained for about two hours after which the Officer in Charge called us to his office and told us we were being charged for holding an unsanctioned meeting. After this, we were taken back to the charge office and the Officer in Charge said he was consulting his superiors over the issue.”
He added: “At around 10pm, we were released and I questioned the station head over the legality of our arrest and he told me that every meeting that we hold, even if we are the three of us, should have police clearance.”
Efforts to get a comment from police provincial spokesperson for Harare, Tedius Chibande, were fruitless as he was out of the office.
