Mpilo starts garden project

The biggest referral hospital in southern Zimbabwe, Mpilo Central Hospital, is embarking on income generating projects to expand its capital expenditure, according to Chief Executive Officer, Lawrence Mantiziba.

“The hospital has a farm where we have decided to venture into both nutritional gardening and other commercial agricultural projects,” he said. “We are hoping to raise about $6 million to revamp our hospital.” Mantiziba said they needed a tractor and other farming equipment to enhance their efforts.

“We are embarking on various fundraising programmes to rehabilitate our theatres, laundry services, casualty departments and boilers,” he said.

Mpilo has a carrying capacity of 1,000 beds and was being overwhelmed by patients. Out of three boilers, only one is functional.
