Mwaruwari happy with second season

Former senior national soccer team captain Benjani Mwaruwari was a happy man early this week, after he signed a one-year contract with Johannesburg-based ABSA Premiership side, Bidvest Wits University. He joins three fellow Zimbabweans in the side - defender Thomas Sweswe, midfielder Tinashe Nengomasha and midfielder Denver Mukamba, the current warriors skipper.

Seeking a swansong to a fruitful career that took him from Air Zimbabwe Jets to South Africa’s Jomo Cosmos, Switzerland’s Grasshoppers Zurich, AJ Auxerre in France, Portsmouth, Manchester City and Sunderland (all in England), Mwaruwari signed with Chippa United in the middle of last season.

His experience helped the struggling side get off the bottom of the log to a play-offs position at the end of the season. But he could not fulfil his wish to save the club from the dreaded chop due to contractual agreements that eventually pushed him out of the Cape Town club.

Mwaruwari, said he was happy to combine with three-time championship-winning coach, Gavin Hunt, who has also joined Wits. “Hunt has won the South African league three times already and I believe that working under him will be a joyful experience,” said the Zimbabwean star, who nearly worked with Hunt at SuperSport United last season, before he landed at Chippa.

Hunt was full of praise for having finally landed the signature of the man he spoke highly of last season. “We have signed Benjani for one season and I am very happy to work with a player of his talent and such huge experience,” said Hunt.

“With players like him, we will definitely be fighting for the championship this season. He has been the missing link in our side and now that we have him, things will be easier for the rest of the squad.”

Benjani also teams up with his former Portsmouth captain, Aaron Mokoena, who also starred for Blackburn Rovers. The former Zimbabwe captain is rumoured to have signed a R2 million contract that will see him become one of the top-earners in the league with a monthly salary of R170 000.
