New Zimbabwe

EDITOR - Cecil John Rhodes believed that the land he conquered would forever be in his hands, but the gallantry of the Zimbabwean people proved him wrong. We were able to destroy the enemy who was superior to us in numbers and equipment, because we are a people of bravery and mercy and because we cooperated and knew the strategy of war and we had our country at heart.

We are now freed from the oppressive foreign yoke and we shall forever remember those heroic warriors who were determined not to surrender the great charge passed on to them by their fathers. The likes of Herbert Chitepo, Joshua Nkomo, Josiah Tongogara and many others became martyrs for the freedom of the land they loved.

No-one can know the gratitude I feel to God that Mugabe signed the Zimbabwe draft constitution into law. A fresh chapter of history of the new Zimbabwe begins.

How many young men, women and native people were killed during colonial rule? How many hectares of fertile land did the settlers forcefully take from our forefathers? Surely, this injustice needs to be corrected.

We were longing for a new Zimbabwe with a government which will protect our nation and make it respectable by guaranteeing the liberty of the people and freedom of conscience through this new supreme law. – Mawira Kufakunesu, by e-mail
