Nyongani loses sponsorship

Veteran long-distance runner, Talkmore Nyongani, said recently that he would not be participating in any race this year, following his loss of sponsorship. “It is sad that after being in the athletics industry for 12 years, I have lost support and things are not good at all,” said Nyongani.

“My main sponsor is still fighting a murder case in the courts. To make matters worse, our independent training group just broke down. I am not getting the support I need and will therefore, not be participating in any major races this year. Every athlete can attest that without proper support, you can’t go anywhere.

There are other vital issues involved in this career and these include a lot of travelling,” he said. Despite his problems, Nyongani said he would take advantage of this period to improve up his educational background. “My major aim now is to focus on studying towards short sports courses so that I can prepare for life after the track.”

Meanwhile, Nyongani is already looking beyond this year as he has set his eyes on Brazil Olympics.

“I have designed a long-term programme for 2016 and that is my biggest goal at the moment. I missed the London Olympics due to injuries and would now want to go to the Brazil 2016 showcase, which I think would be my last professional competition,” he said.

Nyongani has previously won some tightly-contested races like the Dakar Grand Prix six times in a row.
