The city fathers recently purchased the vehicles from an unidentified company in South Africa and so far eight have been delivered.
Mayor Tedious Chimombe confirmed that that council made the purchase but insisted the vehicles would not be luxury cars.
“There are areas in the city that have not had water in their taps for six years. Garbage collecting mechanisms are very poor and the roads are in a deplorable condition. Against that background, how do you say buying vehicles worth $2 million is justified?” asked Cornelias Selipiwe, the Gweru Residents and Rate Payers Association chairperson.
