Parties prepare for the polls

Political parties are gearing themselves for elections. Almost 30 parties are set to contest, including Zanu (PF), MDC-T, MDC, Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn and ZAPU. Party spokespeople told The Zimbabwean whether they think their chances of success are good.

Douglas Mwonzora: MDC-T

“There is no doubt that given a free and fair election, the MDC will achieve a landslide victory. The MDC is the only party that has successfully held a policy conference to come up with policies under which Zimbabwe will be governed.

“We will be carrying the message to the people that the MDC will create one million jobs in the first five years so that people get employment. We will eradicate all forms of corruption because this is a cancer that has eaten Zimbabwe’s Institutions. We will also integrate Zimbabwe’s economy into the world economy so that Zimbabwe is run on sound economic policies and not on policies that scare away investors.”

Wilson Khumbula: MKD

“I believe our party should be given the chance because it is the only party that has the capacity to move the country into prosperity. Judging from Makoni (the party’s President) himself, he has no blemish. Although he once worked in Zanu (PF), he came out smart and unstained.

“I have never been taken to court for corruption and the people should look at leadership like that to move the country forward. Currently we are engaged in a screening process to ensure candidates who are going to contest are unstained people. We are looking at creating a better society and we are hopeful we will win because we are working day and night.”

Nhlahla Dube: MDC

“Since our last Congress, we have been visible at a grassroots level mobilising support for the party and we are still doing that. Our President is actually engaging with villagers to mobilise support for the party.

“Our chances of winning are way better than the other contestants, especially those in the GNU. We are the only party not involved in the abuse of the Constituency Development Fund as well as corruption among councillors. Our credentials speak for themselves and our Ministers in government have performed above expectations. We have a fervent leadership and the people have seen that so there is no doubt we are going to win.”

Rugare Gumbo: Zanu (PF)

“We will give you a manifesto which will explain what we have done and what we intend to do. The manifesto will be out next week.”

Njobisa Noko: ZAPU

“We will be fielding candidates in all the country’s constituencies. We have already started outreach programmes and we are also tying the loose ends in terms of candidates selection. Our election manifesto is almost ready and we are only waiting to change one or two things. The manifesto will absolutely be able to deliver Zimbabweans from the economic bondage and give them a sense of security.

“We also have a programme under which we are mobilising our members to register to vote.”

Gondayi Vutuza: Zanu Ndonga

“We are going to hold a conference to decide on our coalition partner for the next elections and if we agree, we will advise people to vote for that party but if there is no agreement, we will tell our people to vote for our candidates.”
