Pastors’ peace initiative

The Zimbabwe Pastors Fellowship is upping peace campaigns ahead of the next election, to ensure that that there is stability in the country after the poll.

“The post election period is the most dangerous and this is why our organisation has intensified peace campaigns as election dates fast approach,” said the Programmes Manager for Zimbabwe Pastors’ Fellowship, Morris Chivandire.

He said his organisation had, since January 2012, been preaching peace, starting with the engagement of church leaders. “We want our leaders to understand our role as the church in society. They should not take sides and are there to guide and speak the truth on any political issues.”

He highlighted that it is the duty of the church to encourage the culture of political tolerance and act as the ‘mediator among political parties especially when there is conflict’.

The organisation, a christian faith based network of religious leaders from various denominations, has since January 2012 embarked on an initiative entitled “The Peace and Justice programme”. “We are encouraging discussion beyond denominational and political barriers. We are talking about what we can do as the church to encourage democracy,” he said.
