He believes past trends have shown there is need to put in place mechanisms to monitor unscrupulous deals by political office bearers.
“It is crucial for anyone wishing to take political office to declare his or her assets so that we do not get surprises when someone suddenly has $10 million in a bank account. People should know the status of an individual before he or she takes office so that in the event of corruption, they will be able to know that something is going wrong,” said Ncube.
In May, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs, Virginia Mabhiza, revealed that a total of 20 Members of Parliament have been identified for prosecution on allegations of abusing the CDF.
Last year, four Members of Parliament: Albert Mhlanga (MDC-T, Pumula), Marvelous Khumalo (MDC-T, St Mary’s), Cleopas Machacha (MDC-T, Kariba) and Franco Ndambakuwa (Zanu (PF), Magunje) were arrested for CDF abuse. Their arrests were, however, stopped after the intervention of the Attorney General.
In 2010, the MDC-T National Executive fired all of its councilors from Chitungwiza Town Council on allegations of corruption.
Ncube bemoaned that some public office bearers are becoming rich overnight and their lifestyles are out of sync with their salarys.
“We need transparency and good morals. If the people are suffering and the public office bearers are living lavishly, that is not good,” said Ncube.
