Prime minister visits Science Park

Mozambican Prime Minister Alberto Vaquina on Saturday visited the Science and Technology Park which is under construction at Maluana, about 90 kilometres north of the capital city Maputo, as part of a tour he is conducting of Maputo province.

Prime Minister Vaquina received a detailed explanation of the progress towards completing construction at the park, which is officially due to be handed over at the end of July.

According to the park’s Technical Director, Zefanias Chitsungo, construction began in May 2010 and has cost 25 million US dollars. He added that so far about 95 per cent of the work has been completed.

When the construction work is concluded a new vocational education institute will be born. It will take in students from across the country who will reside in accommodation in Chibututuine in Manica district. The residence will have the capacity to look after three hundred students.

Once completed, the park will have information systems, fixed and mobile telephone access, television, laboratories, and other crucial services. Water will be provided by wells, with tests showing that the water is of high quality.

The Prime Minister stressed that the aim of the park, in terms of staff training, should be to add value for the country and to forge a new awareness of work in this era of knowledge based economies.

Zefanias Chitsungo replied that this question has been carefully addressed, with some of the courses to be taught at the park developed in partnership with the University of Eduardo Mondlane (Mozambique’s oldest and largest institution of higher education).
