Tongaat Hulett under fire

The government has strengthened its effort to grab Tongaat Hulett, barely a month after Zanu (PF) supporters threatened to shut down the sugar milling giant.

Masvingo Provincial Governor, Titus Maluleke, wrote a letter to the company, instructing it to appear before a provincial committee to explain why it had failed to comply with the indigenisation law.

Maluleke also accused the company of failing to reveal its shareholding structure and under-declaring the size of its plantations.

In a letter dated June 3, 2013 addressed to Tongaat Chief Executive Officer, Sydney Mutsambiwa, Maluleke said the company would soon face the wrath of the law.

“We wonder what motive you have,” wrote Maluleke.

According to Maluleke, the government is planning to take some of the plantations from the company in order to give them to local people.

Masvingo Provincial Administrator Felix Chikovo this week confirmed the developments but said they had not come up with a date for the hearing.

“We are going to meet the company managers at Tongaat this week but I am not sure of the date,” said Chikovo. “The company has failed to comply with indigenisation laws and has failed to co-operate.”

Although no official comment could be obtained from the Tongaat CEO, Mutsambiwa, at the time of going to press the company has previously stated that it has fully complied with the indigenisation law.
