Vote buying: MDC-T losers bitter

MDC-T candidates who lost primary elections to the party’s former Gweru MP, Timothy Mkhahlera, have put forward a letter of complaint to party Organising Secretary Nelson Chamisa alleging vote buying.

Maxwell Chivandikwa, Desmond Ngwengwe and party Midlands Youth Treasurer, Livingstone Chiminya, accused Mkhahlera of paying voters in the run up to the election held a fortnight ago in order to get support. The Gweru businessman also reportedly bussed the voters to the election, in contravention of party rules.

The losing candidates also want Mkhahlera to be disqualified on the basis that he had not been in the MDC-T for five years after having defected to what was then the MDC-M.

Ngwengwe has announced that he is leaving MDC-T and will contest as an independent candidate in the elections.

In the event that the issue is not resolved, the MDC-T risks splitting the vote and giving Zanu (PF)’s Kizitho Chivamba an opportunity to snatch the parliamentary seat.

Jameson Tsuro, the MDC-T Midlands South Acting Organising Secretary, said he was aware of the grievances.

“I would advise the disgruntled members to continue working for the party as we wait for finalisation of the matter,” said Tsuro.
