Zapu to unveil candidates at weekend

The Zimbabwe African People’s Union will unveil its candidates for the coming elections at a two day national council meeting scheduled for Bulawayo this weekend.

Zapu says it expects to field candidates for all seats nationally.

“Since we have full structures at district level, Zapu will field all the 1, 950 candidates for the local authority portfolios and 210 for MPs,” said party spokesperson, Mjobisa Noko.

The Dubiso Dabengwa led party says it will come up with party strategies on how to participate in coming elections during the weekend deliberations.

Zapu shrugged off its former regional party tag and has become a fully fledged national political organisation.

MDC-T is winding up party primaries this weekend while Zanu (PF) is set to conduct the same on Monday.

MDC led by Welshman Ncube says it will hold primaries in constituencies with more than one aspiring candidates on a date to be decided.

Recently, President Robert Mugabe proclaimed election date for July 31, after he was ordered to do so by the Constitutional Court.

The date was contested by other political parties, leading to SADC holding an urgent June 15 Maputo summit on Zimbabwe.

SADC recommended that President Mugabe and other GNU principals should approach the courts and seek deferment of the election date, to allow for adequate preparations for the poll.
