5 join MDC coalition

Five more political parties have endorsed the MDC leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, for presidency in the July 31 polls.

The parties joined Mavambo Kusile Dawn and the Reketayi Semwayo led faction of Zanu Ndonga, who formed a grand coalition for change last month against President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu (PF).

The five parties: United People’s Party, Voice of the People, Democratic Party, Zimbabwe Organised Open People’s Party, and Zanu Ndonga said the coalition was based on the need to topple Zanu (PF) in the forthcoming plebiscite.

Speaking at the MDC- T headquarters in Harare, UPP leader, Kuratidza Sandati, said a grand coalition was the only way of removing Mugabe.

“Divided we fall, united we stand. I am happy to tell the people that we are united with the MDC and we give our support to Tsvangirai in the coming elections and we are going to remove the Zanu (PF) regime,” he said.

Analysts have described the move by opposition parties in Zimbabwe to form a coalition against Zanu (PF) as significant in bringing about political change.

Political analyst, Greg Lennington, said the coalition showed that opposition parties had set aside party politics and were driving a national agenda to remove Mugabe.

“People are now tired and they now need a change of leadership,” he said.

MDC Secretary General, Tendai Biti said the MDC was open to the formation of a broad alliance to fight Zanu (PF) and ensure the party’s defeat in the forthcoming elections.

“A lot of negotiations are taking place and we will continue doing them behind the scenes as the people fight poverty, unemployment and under development,” said Biti.

Gondai Vhutuza, the Vice President of Zanu Ndoga, said his party had already joined the coalition for change with the MDC and one of its senior members, Reketayi Semwayo, was contesting the elections on an MDC ticket.

“Everyone who supports Zanu Ndonga should support the candidature of Tsvangirai in the presidential election,” said Vhutuza.

Zapu Vice President, Canciwell Nziramasanga, said it was time for the people of Zimbabwe to unite in order to stop the looting of the country’s resources. He endorsed the candidature of Tsvangirai in the coming elections.
