Biti confident of MDC-T victory

In spite of Zanu (PF)’s attempts to rig the Wednesday general elections, MDC-T is guaranteed of victory, says the party’s Secretary General.

At a media briefing today at Harvest House, the MDC-T headquarters, Biti said, in apparent reference to President Robert Mugabe, that dictators belonged to the past and would not subvert popular will for change.

“The Red Machine is winning this election by a wide margin,” declared Biti.

“Zanu (PF) has a problem of how they want to panel beat the results. As the MDC we are not going to accept that illegality. The world has moved and tin pot dictators will no longer be able to subvert the will of the people,” said Biti.

He bemoaned ZEC’s failure to avail an up to date voters’ roll to political parties and the reduction of urban voting stations, saying the 920 centres that were used for polling in 2008 had been cut down to 875.

Biti alleged that illegal voter registration was still taking place in constituencies like Harare East, which he has presided over for the past five years.

“We have raised concerns with ZEC over their (capacity to conduct) credible elections on July 31 and we are not getting firm answers that will comfort the people of Zimbabwe. We are not inspired by their capacity to deliver a clean election,” said Biti.

Biti said violence was flaring up ahead of polling day and, in the last four days, the MDC had recorded 40 incidences that took place in the countryside.
