Byo group in UK festivals

A Bulawayo- based arts group, Umdumo weSizwe, has been selected to represent the country at the Aberdeen International Youth Festival and Edinburgh Fringe festival.

Umdumo’s tour in the UK follows last month’s debut appearance of another Bulawayo arts ensemble, Umkhathi Theatre Works, at the New York Dance Africa Festival in the US.

Umdumo Wesizwe Director, Gugulabo Nkomo told The Zimbabwean that the group would be on a month long tour in the UK.

“Having failed represent the country in the New York Dance Festival, our group has been chosen to represent the country in the Aberdeen International Youth Festival,” said Nkomo.

He said the group would showcase its new play ‘Mxhento’ which was named after the group’s former director, Mqoqi Mxhe Nkomo who passed away two years ago.

“The show will play a significant part in the history of Umdumo weSizwe as it will be dedicated to our former director who passed way in July 2011,” he said.

The all male group was formed in 1994 and has recorded four albums.
