Council fails to pay workers

The local city council has for three months in a row failed to pay its workers and at the same time spent $2 million on vehicles for senior and middle managers at Town House. The vehicles were purchased from an unidentified South African-based company a fortnight ago. Council employees who spoke to The Zimbabwean described the non-payment of their salaries as an indication of misplaced priorities.

“Our families are suffering. We are failing to feed ourselves but managers are driving luxurious vehicles,” said one disgruntled worker who refused to be named.

Others said their efforts to engage management were proving to be fruitless. “We have been trying to push for our salaries to be released but to no avail. We keep on being told that there is no money,” said another council worker.

Daniel Matawu, the city’s Town Clerk, blamed the situation on rate-payers and big companies who owe the council money.

The Gweru Residents and Rate Payers Association has in the past challenged the council to channel the little it gets to key areas such as salary payments.
