Expelled mayor to split MDC-T vote

Local mayor Tedious Chimombe, who was expelled from the MDC-T on corruption charges, has vowed to woo party supporters to vote for him as an independent candidate.

Chimombe told The Zimbabwean that his base of support was drawn from disgruntled MDC-T supporters.

“I will be contesting as an independent candidate in the race for Gweru urban parliamentary seat. The decision to do that was not mine alone but came from disgruntled MDC-T supporters who feel their party’s candidate, Sessil Zvidzai, rigged the primary election,” said Chimombe.

During the primary poll to choose an MDC-T candidate for Gweru urban, Zvidzai beat incumbent MP Rodrick Rutsvara with 15 votes. However, since then, the result has been contested. Last week, efforts to hold primary polls to choose MDC-T council candidates failed after Rutsvara’s supporters descended on the venue and disrupted the gathering.

Sources in MDC-T told The Zimbabwean that Zanu (PF)’s Gweru Urban candidate and Midlands State University lecturer, Christopher Gwatidzo, may win the race due to the split vote of the PM Morgan Tsvangirai led party.

“We are going to see a repeat of the 2008 scenario when parallel candidates in MDC-T split the vote and gave Zanu (PF) an advantage. The best thing the party could do is get Chimombe to withdraw.”
