The apparent arson is the second in five years to befall the elderly woman, and followed a Zanu (PF) rally which she was forced to attend and at which she refused to denounce MDC-T leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, when ordered to make slogans.
‘’The meeting was addressed by one Chikanda and we were called one by one to denounce MDC-T President, Morgan Tsvangirai. I could not stomach it,” said Chivera.
Eight bags of maize, a wardrobe, 20 bags of fertilizer, several blankets, among other household goods, went up in smoke during the attack but she managed to escape with five grandchildren who sleeping in the house.
“We must be tolerant to each other regardless of our political differences. I am lucky to be alive, but where will I get food or clothes for the kids? ’’ she said.
Her son in law, Linos Mugwandarikwa, who lost a brother ,Tapiwa, in 2008 in politically motivated violence said: ‘’The action (arson) is unwarranted as (President Robert Mugabe and Tsvangirai) are preaching peace ahead of the (July 31) harmonised elections. We know the suspects but it will take time for them to be arrested’’ Mugwandarikwa said.
A headman, Richardson Dzenge bemoaned the political polarisation in his village.
Hurungwe North Zanu (PF) candidate, Reuben Marumahoko, said: “People must refrain from all forms of violence ahead of elections.’’
Mashonaland West police spokesperson, Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara, said he was yet to get a report of the case.
