It is believed that the exercise is meant to facilitate rigging by Zanu (PF) ahead of the next elections set for July 31. Lilian Acropol, the MDC-T Midlands South Chairperson, said when party officials arrived at the center in Zvegona village over the
weekend, those manning the station said they were not operating under ZEC but were taking orders directly from Tobaiwa Mudede, the Registrar General.
Some of those being registered were bussed in from outside the district. “We have taken the matter to ZEC and we are in possession of images which we took of the center as evidence. When we approached ZEC, they indicated that they were unaware of the center but promised to look into the matter”, said Acropol.
The matter comes at a time when Innocent Benza, the Mutasa Central Zanu (PF) candidate who runs Herentals Colleges, transported his employees to go and register as voters in his constituency pretending to be from Manicaland. According to the amended registration requirements demanded by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, a prospective voter can complete an affidavit form claiming to be a resident of a particular area, if they do not have other proof of residence.
This is the technicality used by Benza to beat the electoral process and register his employees from Kwekwe and Gweru in Mutasa Central.
