Leaders lied say angry supporters

Hundreds of Zanu (PF) supporters from various districts in Masvingo had to endure long hours outside the Arena B grounds outside Mucheke stadium - the venue of President Robert Mugabe’s star rally held last week, after failing to get transport to ferry them back home.

Most of the supporters from rural areas who were ferried to the rally by aspiring candidates slept on pavements.

Supporters told The Zimbabwean they were angry at their leaders who lied that they would take them to and from the rally. “They lied to us. We never thought that we were going to be dumped after the rally. After all, we did not volunteer to be there,” said a supporter from Zaka.

There were three groups of stranded people at Mandava Fuel Service Station a few meters from the venue, four groups at Exor and three groups at Mucheke Hall. Others slept in open corridors in the town centre. Zanu (PF) Provincial Chairman Lovemore Matuke said the transportation of supporters to the rally was the responsibility of individual party members.

“This is not the burden of the party as individuals pledged to ferry people to the venue and it is their own baby to ensure that they carry these people back to their homes” Matuke said.
