Makombe crash: wreckage disappears

Supporters of the Liberation War Veterans Association of Zimbabwe Secretary General Shadreck Makombe, who was seriously injured in a road accident few minutes before he could address journalists on Zanu (PF)’s rigging in the party’s just ended primary elections, have questioned circumstances surrounding the incident.

His vehicle was hit head on by an unidentified car. “All fingers point to an assassination attempt by well-coordinated hit squad in Zanu (PF). For instance, we have been trying in vain to locate the wreckage of Makombe’s vehicle and that which hit it since Monday night.

Normally, all wreckages of road accidents which happen in the province are taken to the Gweru Vehicle Inspection Department depot the same night but that has not happened in the case of Makombe. Police are not even cooperative in telling us where the wreckages are,” said one sympathiser of Makombe.

Another one told The Zimbabwean that it is not even clear why there was such a rapid response from the police, the company that towed away the wreckages and the Fire Brigade department in attending to the accident scene. Normally these departments arrive very late at accident scenes and usually without required devices to rescue survivors.

“It appears some people knew the accident was going to take place. We arrived at the scene 15 minutes after the incident when Makombe had phoned us to say he had been injured. However, by the time we arrived there, he had been whisked away and the car that hit him had also been towed away.

“It is also not clear why tight security has been put in place to deny admittance to some people who want to see him at the hospital,” said another staunch supporter of Makombe.

According to an anonymous social media personality, Baba Jukwa, more assassinations are going to be witnessed within Zanu (PF) as succession battles to replace aged President Robert Mugabe take centre stage. Recently, there have been reports of assassinations and attempted killings within the party that coincided with the holding of Zanu (PF) primaries.

Prominent among the victims is former Mines Minister and MP, Edward Chindori-Chininga.
