MDC-T betrayed workers: ZCTU

The MDC-T has betrayed the workers who contributed to its formation in 1999, says Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions President, George Nkiwane. He was speaking to The Zimbabwean on the sidelines of the ZCTU Central Region’s Education and Workplace training workshop recently.

“There are some in the MDC who are pushing their agenda. They push for policies that worsen the plight of workers. We will continue critising them until they make a commitment to help deal with hardships faced by workers countrywide,” said Nkiwane in apparent reference to Finance Minister Tendai Biti’s announcement that the government cannot increase civil servants’ salaries. “Such leaders in MDC behave as if they do not know the reason the MDC was formed. The party was formed to push the needs of workers, among other things. Although we will continue to support MDC-T, we feel they have to do more for the workers.”

Despite industrial action by the civil servants, Biti has held firm to the fact that the mines ministry headed by Obert Mpofu shortchanged his ministry.

Public Service Minister Lucia Matibenga, who is a former ZCTU Vice President, is on record saying that only when the MDC-T takes full control of the government will workers see change.
