Mtukudzi, Black protect environment

Afro-jazz superstar, Oliver Mtukudzi, and tennis ace, Wayne Black, have been described as “passionate” environmentalists by a veteran activist.

Environment Africa country director, Banarbas Mawire, said his organisation had been working with Mtukudzi and Black to spearhead environmental awareness programmes in the communities.

Mawire said the relationship between EA and the two was hinged on their passion for the environment. He said Mtukudzi had inspired many villagers to preserve the environment in their respective communities.

“Oliver (Mtukudzi) is very passionate about the environment. If you go to his rural home, he has conserved a lot of trees and inspired villagers around him to look after the environment,” said Mawire.

He added that the multi-award winning star was an influential figure.

Mtukudzi has been working with EA for the past 10 years as their ambassador and even produced an environmental documentary. In the DVD, Mtukudzi calls on community members to look after natural resources, specifically trees, the soil, water and waste management.

EA is closely linked with another musician, Pax Gomo, who has teamed up with various artistes to adopt urban forests.
