In Mutare Central there was a slow start at the Meikles Park where only 60 people had voted as at 0900hrs. Things improved at around mid-day as more voters began trickling in. No figures on the number of voters at the polling station were available at the time The Zimbabwean arrived at the poling station.
In the same constituency at Mutare Civic Centre there was a large number of voters who had queued to cast their votes. According to observers at the polling station, 250 people had cast their votes and three had been turned away because they were in the wrong constituency.
In Sakubva, which is the hub of Mutare Central constituency, very long queues were seen in all polling stations. Some voters were expressing the fear that they would not be able to vote before 1900hrs when voting will end.
At Zamba Primary school there were reported cases of two Zanu (PF) youths being turned away after they went to the polling station wearing party t/shirts.
There were other incidents at Elise Gledhill school where Farai Jokonya and Theresa Mutasa were turned away after their names were not found in the voters roll. Generally voting in the area is peaceful.
There was a very long queue at Mutare Polytechnic. Election observers at the polling station confirmed that there was an overwhelming response, though not giving exact figures.
At Hillside Sorts Club there were a majority of the white community who gathered around 0800hrs. One of the voters Nancy Pearl said the process was going on smoothly.
