Neighbourhood Watch Committee member imprisoned for attending an MDC-T rally

A member of the police Neighbourhood Watch Committee in Mvurwi has been sentenced to 14 days imprisonment at Chikurubi for attending an MDC-T rally held on Saturday.

Givemore Murungweni was reportedly arrested on July 14 by a group of police officers who accused him of being an MDC-T supporter after having attended the party’s rally on July 13.

Currently, lawyers form the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, led by Kennedy Masiye, are trying to secure his release.

Masiye told The Zimbabwean that Murungweni is still detained at Mvurwi police station awaiting his transfer to Chikurubi.

“We are trying to secure his release. The charges against him are not yet clear but they have to do with bringing the name of the police force into disrepute. He (Murungweni), was arrested on 14 July and on Monday he was taken to Guruve for disciplinary hearing and that is where he was sentenced,” said Masiye.

Police Commissioner General, Augustine Chihuri, who has on numerous occasions declared his support for Zanu (PF) in clear defiance of the constitution, is on record warning his subordinates against supporting the MDC-T.

He is on record as well urging police officers to ensure a resounding victory for Zanu (PF) in the next elections.
