New sport for Zim

The Sport and Recreation Commission recently completed the registration of the Aero Modeling Federation of Zimbabwe, aimed at promoting science education through sport.

The sport, active in more than 98 countries globally, is governed by the Federation of Aeronautique international, which was formed in 1905 and has its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Aero Modelling Federation of Zimbabwe’s Secretary-general, Patrice Chakanyuka, said the sport allowed participants to fly in a competition using remote controlled model airplanes.

“The sport existed in Zimbabwe in a recreational form in Ruwa, the Harare Showgrounds and in Dzivaresekwa, but had not been officially recognised as a sport,” said Chakanyuka.

He likened the sport to the traditional kites that were flown by children in the old days, where they competed on who flew their kites higher and longer.

Chakanyuka’s organisation has hit the road running, after going to schools to sell their idea. He said the response had been overwhelming.
