Nkomo’s anniversary hijacked

Zanu (PF) last week hijacked the anniversary commemorations of the death of Vice President Joshua Nkomo and turned it into a Zanu (PF) campaign.

The party organised public lectures on the life of the late Vice President, which were mostly attended by Zanu (PF) supporters. “We should make sure that we all vote for Zanu (PF) and preserve Nkomo’s legacy. If we vote for the MDC, Nkomo will turn in his grave,” said Titus Moyo, an executive member of the Zanu (PF) Bulawayo province.

The Zanu (PF) Provincial Chairman, Callistus Ndlovu, presented one of the lectures at the Bulawayo city hall.

Ndlovu accused MDC of sabotaging Nkomo related projects in Bulawayo.

He accused the MDC-T dominated council of resisting the mounting of Nkomo’s statue along Main Street and the renaming of Main Street as Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo.

Ironically, those projects were started before the formation of the inclusive government which brought the two MDC formations into government.

“Zanu (PF) was hoping that it was going to lure the electorate and regain popularity in the forthcoming elections by associating with the Nkomo brand. Unfortunately that will not happen because the people of this region have suffered and been neglected for a very long time,” said Gorden Phiri, a Bulawayo-based political analyst.
