Polling at numerous centres in the Midlands was delayed by hours as MDC-T polling agents queried the legitimacy of members of neighbourhood watch committee members, who are not regular members of the ZRP but help the organisation with policing.
“These constabularies are not civil servants and should therefore not be part of the special vote. ZEC seems to understand our position,” said one MDC-T polling agent in Vungu in the province by telephone.
At the Tongogara polling station in Shurugwi North, an agent said about 50 members of the neighbourhood committee were barred from casting their ballots, and had to be ferried away to the Rusunuguko centre in Shurugwi South where they hoped to vote.
It could not be established at the time of publishing if they had managed to vote at Rusununguko.
Lillion Acropol, the MDC-T Midlands Provincial Chairperson, accused Zanu (PF) of trying to rig the special poll through the use of constabularies.
“This is daylight robbery. We will not allow the neighbourhood watch members to vote. They are brazenly partisan and are being brought through the back door,” said Acropol.
She said, on Saturday in Zvishavane, the constabularies had brought a truckload of Zanu (PF) regalia to the small town and distributed it to police details at their stations.
“We are engaging SADC observers to ensure that the special ballot is conducted in a free and fair way. My worry is that, by the time they arrive at polling stations, the constabularies might have already voted,” added Acropol.
The special vote, extended to civil servants, security sector employees and diplomatic missions, will be held between today and tomorrow, to allow beneficiaries to conduct government business on during the general election to be held on July 31.
Zimbabwe Electoral Commission and police public relations department calls went unanswered.
