Tough World Cup route for Sables

Zimbabwe’s Sables are in a tough 2015 World Cup qualifying group that includes old foes Namibia and Africa champions Kenya for the route to England for the global finals.

Also joining them in a four team qualifying group is Madagascar, a country with a proven rugby tradition. The four teams will play in the 2014 Confederation of African Rugby Africa Cup Division 1(a) where the qualifying team will be decided.

The winners of the group will qualify for the finals in which they have been drawn in the same group with New Zealand, Argentina, Tonga and a qualifier from Europe.

“It will be a thrilling competition and I can’t wait to see who book their place at Rugby World Cup 2015 to fly the flag for Africa alongside South Africa,” says Confederation of African Rugby president Abdelaziz Bougja. South Africa as one of the top rugby playing nations in the world do not play in the qualifiers and have automatic entry to the World Cup finals.

The runners up from the Africa group will get another chance for qualification as they will take part in the play offs against teams from Europe.

Zimbabwe have not qualified for the World Cup finals since 1991. This time, they also face a Kenyan side who beat the Sables at the recent Africa Cup in Madagascar as well as Namibia who have always beaten Zimbabwe in the final qualifying round for a place at the World Cup.

The Kenyans are one of the rising forces in world rugby with their sevens team among the best in the world. The Kenyan sevens rugby team is ranked in the top 10 on the HSBC Series and some of their players feature for the national team.

But before dreaming of a World Cup berth, the Sables have to put their house in order and sort out the rift that now exists between team Manager, Lawson Mtongwizo, and some of the players including captain Costa Dinha.
