War vets to block reform

As calls intensify for the implementation of democratic reforms ahead of elections, the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association has declared security sector reform an untouchable area.

The two MDC formations have said security sector and media reforms are critical for ensuring a conducive environment for free, fair, transparent and credible elections.

In an interview with The Zimbabwean, ZNLWVA Chairman, Jabulani Sibanda said the attempts to reform the security sector were designed to snatch Zimbabwe from Zanu (PF).

“They (the two MDCs) fail to understand that the security sector does not work like the local government or the Home Affairs Department. We did not get this country through lobbying or going to court. We got it through war and they do not really understand what they are talking about when they talk of security sector reform,” said Sibanda.

Sibanda has reportedly been touring the country threatening people with violence should they vote for the MDC-T in the coming elections.

He refuted the allegations, claiming that the ZNLWVA was committed to the prevalence of peace before, during and after elections.

In May, the Chairperson of the Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army War Veterans Trust, Baster Magwizi, blasted Sibanda for making reckless political statements.

Said Sibanda: “We have been out there in the provinces preaching the gospel of peace. There is no violence or intimidation taking place.”
